How do I view supervision?
The main purpose of supervision is the professional development of the supervisee and the welfare of the client. I believe that a supervisor and supervisee can be co-creators of a learning experience which focuses on new ways of thinking and learning.
What is my role in the session?
Within a professional and contracted relationship my role is flexible. With consideration to the developmental stage of the counsellor I see the tasks of supervision as follows:
• to create a learning relationship
• to value and support
• to consult
• to teach
• to counsel (limited)
• to evaluate
• to monitor ethical/professional issues
‘Supervision provides an opportunity for the student to capture the essence of the psychotherapeutic process as it is articulated and modeled by the supervisor, and to recreate it in the counselling relationship.’
